American Cabaret Belly Dance Technique

American Cabaret Belly Dance Technique FlagUSA

In this mixed level technique course, we will learn and practice a variety of moves that are typical for the American Cabaret belly dance.

The American Cabaret style of belly dance is what most Americans associate with belly dance as they know it from Restaurants and Movies. The name "cabaret" stems from the fact that it was performed mainly in nightclubs and restaurants, not at ethnic festivals. Since the introduction of Middle Eastern Dance to America in 1893 until the 70s, cabaret style belly dancing was synonymous with belly dance. Showmanship, big movements both with arms and legs, lots of traveling, and attention grabbing moves characterize this dance form. Although using traditional Turkish and Egyptian technique, American Cabaret or American Restaurant belly dancing has developed its own distinctive style, using props such as veil, zills, and sword, and encouraging audience interaction. The music for this style can come from anywhere of the Middle East.
